Parish Council Chairman’s Report 2018

Parish Council Chairman’s Annual Report: Tony Hemmingway – April 2018

During the Summer, the Parish Council bought the leasehold of the two flats above Barclays, using some of the capital proceeds from selling the land north of Springfield. The rentals from the flats and from Barclays will provide a good income for the parish. We have also used some of the sale proceeds to part grant-fund, part loan some money for repairs to the roof at the Recreation Centre. The new play area at Springfield has now been completed and fenced and is looking great.

Village centre commuter all-day parking has irritated many residents for some time. We have commissioned Norfolk County Council to advise on new parking restrictions for the centre, including new double yellow lines in places, and limited parking in other places. We hope to have the final drawings on display at the Annual Parish Meeting on 23rd April so that we can consult with you as residents as to whether you want us to go ahead with the restrictions. Hopefully you have read about the proposals in our February Community Newsletter but, if not, the details are on the Council’s website.

It is now 2 years since we wrote to the Government to ask them to make a Compulsory Purchase Order for land north of the current cemetery, for a cemetery extension. The lack of a decision is very worrying for everyone, and very disappointing.

The Parish Council meets on the last Monday of each month, apart from when there are bank holidays, when the meeting is moved forward by one week. Residents are always very welcome to attend the meetings and to raise issues with us. The Council looks after the cemetery, most street lights, the Damgate Lane, Beighton Road and Springfield play areas, the public toilets in The Street, the Fletcher Room (Pre-School), the grasscutting around the village and employs a part-time parish clerk, Pauline James. We have continued to fund the Tuesday night Youth Club, staffed by the YMCA, but we are still looking for more parents to get involved.

The current parish councillors are Sally Aldridge, Annie Bassham, Angela Bishop, David Burnett, Jackie Clover, Barry Coveley, Chris Linehan, Roger Jay, Jamie Pizey, Ellen Thompson, Anna Wade and myself. The councillors are variously involved in village groups such as the Lands Trust, Recreation Centre, Resilience Group, Good Neighbours, AVA, Royal British Legion, Acle Archive and various sports clubs. Look out for events commemorating the end of WW1, with a big party planned for the weekend of 3rd November.

I thank the other councillors for their support, the local Police, our district councillor Lana Hempsall, our county councillor Brian Iles, our cleaner Mick Ward and all volunteers who, behind the scenes, help to keep Acle looking so clean and tidy.

The details of our two websites are included below. Please send details of village events to the clerk so that they can be included on the online calendar. We also have a Facebook page with links to other village groups.
